When the case of an American who had gone into HIV remission in July 2022 was announced, the news was celebrated internationally as another historic step in the search for a cure for the virus that causes AIDS.

This patient is one of the five people in the world who have gone into complete remission of HIV and acute myeloid leukemia thanks to a stem cell transplant.

At 66 years old and diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he was also the oldest of the five, and the one who had been living with the virus the longest.

However, at the time of the announcement, he wanted to maintain his privacy and his name was not revealed.

Almost a year later, Paul Edmonds has decided to get out of anonymity and finally tell his story. In his first interview with a Latin American media outlet, he spoke with BBC News Brazil.
